Why have CCTV systems become so integral to businesses?

By Phil Harvey

Closed-circuit television systems – commonly referred to as CCTV – have come a long way since they began popping up across the UK in the 1970s, initially as protection for large, high-risk establishments such as banks.

However today CCTV systems are very much mainstream. Why? Because they can provide peace of mind, valuable information and, due to their versatility, are useful to all from sole traders and start-ups to multinationals and institutions/locations where security and monitoring is of paramount importance.

In fact, every business with a physical presence could – and probably should – be utilising this powerful technology.

It is not just the prevalence and popularity of CCTV systems that have changed over the years. CCTV systems themselves have evolved as technology has moved forward at phenomenal speed, to the extent that such systems are now multipurpose with a range of additional benefits.

They can also be extremely flexible – controlled and analysed from a multitude of locations on different devices by carefully chosen individuals within a company. For many, the image of a security guard sat monitoring CCTV screens in a dark room onsite are long gone.

And it’s the increasing uses and smartness of CCTV systems that have ultimately made them so increasingly integral to businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Here are four reasons a CCTV system – when installed, implemented and managed by experienced, reputable providers – should become integral to your business.

1) Reduce the risk of crime

The obvious one. Having a visible CCTV system is a huge deterrent to criminals, both in terms of spontaneous acts of criminality and theft and pre-planned acts. Because CCTV captures footage that is unable to be tampered with – resulting in incriminating evidence – criminals will think twice about taking on a CCTV system, with the risks simply too great.

2) Save money

Depending on what your business does, insuring your property, assets and stock can be expensive. Demonstrating a robust, modern and effective CCTV system can help drive your insurance premium down by giving insurers the confidence that your business is well protected.

3) Gain valuable insights

These days, CCTV systems can be linked to integrated computer systems that allow the users to track, monitor and gain valuable insights. Collecting evidence, spotting trends and analysing activity can be extremely useful in forming key business decisions that can take the company forward.

4) Enhance reputation

Employees and customers want to feel like they are in a safe environment where every step is taken to mitigate risk. Stakeholders will appreciate the fact that a business is taking security and safety seriously and a modern CCTV system can help demonstrate to the world that yours is a forward-thinking and socially conscious business.

While you will no doubt trust your workforce to be productive, CCTV is nevertheless a great motivator as it monitors activity taking place 24/7 and is therefore a subtle, non-intrusive way of ensuring best practice in the workplace and that yours is a positive environment for employees and customers.
