Friday 6th September 2019 saw businesses from across the region gather for an evening of celebration and recognition at Derby’s Pride Park Stadium — for the 2019 Derbyshire Business Awards, in association with the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce.
Except for a couple of key faces who couldn’t quite make it (we’ll get to that in a minute!), RDS Global attended with good presence, taking home this year’s Community Impact Award.
Awarded to businesses that have demonstrated exceptional efforts to positively impact local communities, we’re absolutely delighted to be recognised for this achievement. As a Derby-based business, we have a very real sense of place and responsibility to the city and county we operate in.
A part of that involves our work with Derby College — training and preparing the future workforce via our innovative Technology Employer Academy programme. Just a few months ago, two more groups of IT students successfully completed a 17-week placement at our headquarters in Derby to enhance their studies and acquire skills and experience that will stand them in good stead for future employment and, crucially, make them highly employable.
Another area key to ensuring that we’re making a positive difference is our support of local sports and our continued sponsorship of Derby County Ladies’ football teams. For us, it’s about so much more than a mutual love for the sport; it’s about consolidating our view that opportunities should be equal — irrespective of gender — in business and across all areas in life.
Finally, we’ve always believed in giving a helping hand wherever it’s most needed. Over the years, we’re proud to have stood alongside local businesses in support of many worthy and wonderful charitable causes… speaking of which…
While some of the team were being spoiled to a three-course dinner and drinks, our very own Phil Harvey and Andy Flinn — Managing Director and CEO respectively — were busy making their way across Europe, travelling in an old banger, raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust, Variety Children and The Rainy Day Trust.
The duo were somewhere in Salzburg at the time — to be more precise — not even halfway into the Pavestone Rally Challenge. And after a gruelling full day of non-stop driving (in full- London Underground themed fancy dress!), they were absolutely over the moon to hear the good news.
Speaking about winning the award, Phil said: “Our involvement with local organisations, charities and communities has always been for the betterment of our city and its people. It’s something we take very seriously but at the same time, it’s also something we get tremendous joy out of. This award reinforces our belief that businesses can make a meaningful difference.
“Both Andy and I are extremely proud of the team, and the fantastic efforts they put into everything they do. We look forward to joining in the celebrations when we get back. Well done everybody!”
Another highlight of the evening was getting to share the stage with the winner of our sponsored category. Massive congratulations to Chesterfield College Group on winning the Education and Business Partnership award. Awarded to organisations that have worked to help bridge the gap between education and employment, this particular category aligns perfectly with our mission of upskilling the future workforce and we were delighted to be this year’s sponsor.
Of course, we’d also like to extend our congratulations to all of this year’s winners and finalists, and to everybody who helped organise the event. The Chamber Business Awards is a fantastic celebration of the achievements made in business, and we look forward to attending again next year.
